Today's Real Wedding is a special one as it is not your "Traditional Wedding".  We featured Jackie and Duncan on our blog on the lead up to their wedding, as they had decided to get hitched early in the morning, BEFORE running the London Marathon. Jackie is such an inspiring lady and I feel honoured to share her wedding story with you!

What was the first thought when you woke on your wedding day?!

Is it really 5am and am I really thinking about Vaseline, chafing and fuelling more than having a relaxing morning before walking down the aisle? It is fair to say that there was nothing traditional about it. Brilliant fun though. 

How did the dress feel on Marathon day? What did you wear to your Wedding Party? 

The dress was better than I ever imagined. Designed by professional ice skater Frankie Seaman, it was both beautiful and practical (no chafing here and in fact less than when I wear normal running gear). I confess when we started out on our marathon wedding adventure, I never thought I would end up getting a wedding dress and I never thought I would be a bride in the true sense of the word. But, a chance shopping trip with a friend led me to fall in love with one (and the rest is history). I wore the actual wedding dress for a party a week later and Frankie actually modelled the running equivalent on it, which was brilliant. Duncan had no idea and when he saw me in my wedding dress on the night of the party for the big reveal, he said: 'but I thought you loved navy!' 

The other amazing part of the wedding outfit was the jelly baby bouquet. I apologise now to florists across the world, but the thought of sticking sweets in an oasis with florist wire, caught the attention of more than a few brides on social media and I think my plans may have been altered as a result. It was made for me by a beautiful friend and I was so grateful to her for her kindness. 

Where did you get married?

We got married on the Cutty Sark ship at about 7.15am in the morning. It was such a great morning. Our neighbours played the role of chauffeur and dressed up their Renault Scenic with flowers and bows for its one-time role as a wedding car. It was an amazing morning, but it did look a little like sports day rather than a wedding. Everyone was in charity T-shirts, hoodies and lycra - including the photographer.

What did you do between I do and running a marathon? 

The experience was so surreal. I remember feeling elated that we had just got married and then totally terrified at the prospect of running a marathon (particularly as every step was painful due to injury). There really was little time to think though. With press cameras, a quick diversion to see Gabby Logan for a BBC interview on the Greenwich Park bandstand and some rather weird staged kissing in front of a wall of cameras, we barely got time to eat a banana and go to the loo. Not quite the pre-race preparation we had planned and I certainly didn't look very bride like in my running jacket scoffing peanut butter sandwiches!

Describe the feeling of running a marathon with your new Husband!

Well, we didn't exactly run it together (which surprises most people). My gift to Duncan for going along with my rather bizarre plan was that he could run the race at his own pace. That meant 3 hours 27 mins. I was a 'little' slower (and injured) so staggered over the line at 5 hours and 56 mins with my hip full of metal! I actually ran the race with my dad who, with his hip replacement, was an incredible and selfless companion. He did it just to get me round and that is a debt I will never be able to repay. It was such a humbling experience. People knew who we were and cheered, runners congratulated us (and often thought dad was the groom) and supporters were so generous with their words, messages and jelly babies (the bouquet was a bit heavy and ended up in the bag drop, so we were in need of extra sweets). We basically spent six hours saying thank you. Duncan, meanwhile, was being held at the end with a minder so that he could be reunited with me in his sweaty T-shirt 1.5 hours later. Not quite what you'd expect for the first few hours of marriage.

How much money did you raise and who for?

With gift aid, we are now over £29k. We are so so grateful to everyone who donated and helped us nearly double our target. If you'd like to help us tip 30K, you can still donate here!!!!

We are raising money for Willow and Breast Cancer Care.  Both charities helped us celebrate our engagement at a time that could have ripped us apart.  Willow is the only charity to give seriously-ill young adults the chance to have a special day away from the hospitals and the drugs. We went on the Orient Express and were reminded of the fact that while hospitals are an important part of the fight, so too is the chance to think about what you’re fighting for.

Your wedding party was a week later. How did you plan for it and who helped create your vision on the boat?

We thought we'd be a little sweaty and tired after the run to start celebrating with guests, so ended up back on the Cutty Sark a week later for the reception part. It was such a beautiful evening, which meant we could have drinks on the top deck before partying the night away under the ship. The great thing about the Cutty Sark is that the ship has become stronger and more interesting as a result of all the things that haven't gone well in its life. It's a message Duncan and I understand all too well (after I was diagnosed with cancer just three weeks after he proposed) and one that made partying on the ship even more special. We even got to include the one wedding tradition I didn't want to miss. I made the cake!

Where was your honeymoon?

People expected us to go somewhere and relax on the beach. But, we wanted our honeymoon to continue offering a message of hope to those less fortunate than us and trying, like we were just three years ago, to get through tough times. So we trekked the Great Wall of China. The views, the fellow trekkers and those vertical drops, will stay with me forever. A truly unforgettable way to start married life.

What is your next adventure as husband and wife?

Well, Duncan is getting a free pass for a while after his epic efforts. As for me, Frankie asked me if I would trash her running wedding dress as a fitting way to end the story. I think she imagined me walking into a warm sea somewhere for a romantic moment. Not so. In September, I will be swimming 6 miles in the Serpentine to give the dress the send off it deserves. I hope it will be enough to take us over the £30k mark. 

What is your advice to couples planning a slightly alternative wedding day?

Just do it. The best weddings are those that reflect your personality. When you start planning, think about the story of the day you will want to remember together every time the date comes around each year. Our big day will be forever associated with the greatest running race on the planet (and one that raises more money for charity than any other) and that fact makes me smile. We got married and we made every step meaningful. We couldn't have asked for more.

We have so many people to thank for making our wedding adventure so special. From Pret, our families, and McMullens brewery to our brilliant caterers Suzanne James, the incredible Cutty Sark (ship and team) and everyone in between, we have been so so lucky and supported. We couldn't possibly list out all the kind gestures that fill our hearts to this day. But, we have designed and written postcards for everyone who has touched our lives and who made our wedding possible and we will be sending them out for a good while yet! This week is my Nanna's 94th Birthday. On the 3rd of July it would have been my grandparents 69th wedding anniversary too. So in honour of them I wanted to share this blog post with you.

So let me introduce Joy Wight, who is the only Nanna I know who is an active user of Facebook, thanks to her iPad, and who emailed me this extract from her memoir about her wedding day and honeymoon. She is offically a techno-Nan!

July 3rd. 1948 - The Wedding at Last.

"My parents had been disappointed when we said that we wanted the wedding to be held in Birmingham. It was not the custom to wed away from your home town, and I know Mother would have liked her Church friends to have been at the celebrations. We wanted my University friends to be present before they all dispersed to jobs, and John wanted his Youth Association and Moseley Church friends to be present, and of course it was halfway between Edinburgh and Reading.

I bought some white satin-backed material for my wedding dress and some material for the bridesmaids dresses. Because I was not near home and the bridesmaids were in Birmingham, it seemed only sensible to get a local dressmaker to make the gowns. In retrospect this must have been terribly hurtful to my Mother, after all the wonderful clothes she had made for me in the past. How thoughtless one is when young and fancy free!

We booked rooms at a Moseley hotel for the two sets of parents, the Osbornes (friends of Mum and Dad) and myself for the evening before the wedding, and some theatre tickets for them after we had gone away. This was another faux pas. I booked for a very modern play - next to no scenery and a psychological plot - which upset the mentally frail Harold Osborne! I did not learn about that until much later.

Jim, who was to be best man, cycled down to Birmingham from Edinburgh and stayed at the caravan for the night. John had borrowed a jacket to wear with his scout kilt, as clothes were still on coupons and when a man was demobbed from the services he could have either a suit or a casual jacket and grey trousers. John wore his Harris Tweed jacket and flannels for years.

So the great day arrived, and all went according to plan, a lovely service conducted by our friend Rev. Mulholland and reception afterwards in the church hall for about 60 people and with outside caterers. The wine was provided by Grandpa Hall who had been laying it up for years for such an occasion. (As I was 25 when I married he must have begun to give up hope.)  He heard the caterers say what excellent port it was and was highly annoyed when they took all the remaining bottles away after the wedding.

Compared with modern weddings the whole affair was over quite early. There was no evening entertainment. Many guests had to make long journeys home and we were due to get to the Grand Hotel in York for our first stop on the way to Scotland. When we arrived it was a large almost empty hotel and they had finished serving meals and could only provide a few sandwiches . By this time we were very hungry- one rarely eats much at ones own reception! Our only recourse was to go out into the empty litter ridden town and get fish and chips.-Never mind the room was good and the bed big and comfy! -£1-12s-0d B&B for two.

Honeymoon

Next day we left early, using some of our petrol coupons to go up to North Berwick where we were booked in for a week at a little boarding house run by a couple known to Mum and Dad Scotland. lt cost us £9-19s.0d for the week full-board -iron bedstead and capock mattress!  We toured around and visited some distant relatives of Johns one day for 'high tea'. Another day we dropped in on an N.A.B.C. youth conference in Edinburgh . We were really obliged to do this as we had obtained the petrol coupons on the grounds of attending the conference. As you can imagine we were not in there long!"

I love this insight into my grandparents wedding and honeymoon. So very different from what we are used to today. 25 was considered an old bride, no evening reception and their honeymoon was not on somewhere exotic.

The pages you first see are the default pages to get you started.  All except Invitation, Events and Venues, can be deleted. All other pages can be edited and the order of all the pages can be switched via the double headed pink arrows being dragged and dropped. You can add unlimited pages.

Content Editor 

What does Add Page mean?

You can add as many pages as you want and then move them to the correct location within the menu list.  These pages could be about your engagement, introducing your wedding party, detailing the menu and asking people to choose their food. The options are endless!

What does visibility mean?

You can have a lot of invitations, and you might not want all your web pages to be seen by all those people.  Click the drop down arrow and select which invitation can see that page. To set up your invitations go to your Wedding Planner. 

What is Edit?

In the edit section you can build your page. Anything you put in here will only be on that page. You can add Elements, change text, colour and font. You can even add pictures and embellishments.

What is Menu Title?

This is an editable field. The text in here will be on your guest’s menu tool bar. Keep it short if you can.  You can add a longer ‘title page heading’ when you add a text block.

I would like to change the order of the menu, how do I do this?

To change the order of the pages on the menu, you click on the double headed pink arrow, and drag and drop to it's desired location up or down the list.

I have deleted an element, how can I restore it?

When you delete an element, you can add a new one, or go back to the last save to restore your work.

Why can’t I delete some of the pages?

Venues and Events need to be on the website as they tell your guests vital information about the day. They are also linked very importantly to the invitation, ensuring that your guest is viewing the correct information.

Why can’t I edit Venues and Events from this page?

We are working on integrating this, but currently you edit all this detail  with you Wedding Planning dashboard, under Venues and Events. To view what it looks like to your guest, click View Website from your Wedding planner. 

Why can’t I edit Invitation in the Content Editor?

This is just a preview of your invitation that your guests will see. To design and edit this, go to the Invitation section of this site. You can move the order of this in your menu by dragging and dropping the name to the desired place.

Why is my text over the design?

The design is created in the Theme Designer tab (Paintbrush) and the design in here flows through on to every page. To move the text, either add a blank spacer from the “add Elements” section or edit the overall design. Alternatively add the 'design' as a banner rather than a background and this will avoid text going over the design. 

ELEMENTS

Banner Image

You can upload a banner image to any part of the site, but commonly this would be used to upload an image (Ideally 990px by 400px) in the header of the page or on the background. This image will be visible on all pages.

Block of Text

Text can be added as part of the design. Maybe it is a quote or a poem you might want to be visible on all pages. You could place this anywhere on the page and it will sit on your theme.  Just delete the current content to begin creating your own.

Block of Text with Image

This is in commonly used as part of the overall design, and usually used within the content editor when creating each page.

Contact Form 

This is used in the content editor when creating a page dedicated to people contacting you. Any guest contacting you through this form will go direct to your email. The emails will NOT be stored on our system.

Your Names

Add your names here and it will be visible on all pages. It can sit in any sections of the page. You can add more than one and maybe even have another one sat in the footer?

Embellishment

We have a bank of copyright free designed embellishments that you can use on the site. You can have multiple, just click Add Element again and select it and place it in the area you want it.

Gallery

When added as part of the design, it will sit on ALL pages. This might not be need and we would suggest just adding it to its own page, within the content editor section.

Guestbook  – Not needed for Theme design

The guestbook should have it’s own page. Any comments that get posted on here will be visible to all guests. You will have the option to delete any if you wish to do so.

Page Heading – Not needed for Theme design

This is the title you might want to give the page. If you want it to be more than a few words, then add a block of text.

Single Image

This image will appear on EVERY page as part of the overall design.  This element is more commonly used within the content editor with a different image being upload on each page.

Embed Map – Not needed for Theme design

Maps are already an option when you create your venue. Should you want to add other maps on other pages with have given you the option to do so!

Blank Spacer

We love this tool. Add this to space out each element so it sits just where you want it to, by moving the slider to increase and decrease the spaces.  You can have loads of these, so don’t worry!

Embed Video – Not needed for Theme design

Did you do a proposal video? Do you want to share it? This Element will let you do that via a YouTube plugin. This would more commonly sit on its own page within the content editor and not be part of the overall design.

Countdown to Wedding Day

This countdown ticker can have its font and colour edited. It sits nicely in the footer if you don’t want it distracting from the overall design.

Wedding Date

Combine this Wedding Date with Your Names and this combo could be part of your design and sit on the top of every page.

Gift List

I don't want to show a Gift List.

That is OK. Don't create a page or list any links to a gift registry!

I want to create another Gift List with another company that is not on your list. How do I do it?

Create a page and then add a Text Block. You can add a link using < > button, and this will send your guests to another gift list option. 

My Wish List is not uploading, what do I do?

If you have the right Wish List Link, it should work. Make sure you copy and paste it correctly and that you have not added a space at the front or the end. 

Can I change the details once I have sent out the invites?

You can easily add additional gifts at anytime.

Can you help me with Amazon?

We just provide a link, we don't have anything to do with Amazon in terms of support. If you use them we do have an affiliate link with them. 

Can you help me with my gift list?

All gift list companies listed offer their own support. We just provide easy links to them.

Image Sizes
What size images do I need before I being designing?

Add Element – Banner Image Content: 990px by 400px

Add Element – Banner Image Header/Footer: 990px by 400px to be inline with page, or bigger if to stretch across the top of the entire site.

Add Element – Single Image – when in the page it can be no wider that 990px. For optimum presentation 600px looks the best for Landscape.

What are the recommended specifications for photos that will be uploaded?

Photo Upload – Gallery or single images for webpage

We suggest that you upload 72 dpi, RGB (colour!) photos that are a maximum height or width of 600 pixels. Please keep in mind that only JPEG files are allowed (files ending in .jpg or .jpeg) are acceptable file formats for photos. There is no size limitation, but the larger your file size is, the longer it will take for your images to upload. We recommend that you try to keep your file sizes as small as possible. Use your PC or Mac to reduce the size of the photo before uploading. (PicMonkey is great for this!)

In what format do my photos need to be saved and is there a size limitation?

The larger your file size is, the longer it will take for the image to upload. You can only upload JPEGS (files ending in .jpg).

Parrot and Pineapple is then brand new website for Rowan Williams, the cake eater, dog lover and importantly to us wedding photographer extraordinaire!

I knew when met her, I had to feature her on my Photography Focus blog series. She is the first wedding photographer that I have actually met, that has an ethical ethos for her business. She totally understood all the eco-friendly benefits of Paperless Wedding and we talked about how a wedding photographer can be eco-friendly. She tries to buy fairly on all her equipment and she sources ethical minded printing and photo book options. She keeps her business pretty local too....but that is more driven by the need to look after her dog rather than reducing the carbon footprint, but it all helps! ;-)

You won't see black and white from Rowan as she loves colour and she tries to make sure that her images reflect all the colours of your wedding day. She is a documentary wedding photographer and she likes to keep her images very informal. Emotions are so important and she works hard to capture the feeling of your day, not just how it looked. Rowan loves collaborating with her couples and is always happy to give advice. Here are a few pointers for you now!

What are your top 2 'Do and Don't' tips for couples on their wedding day? 

Do remember that your wedding day is about you getting married to the love of your life, everything else is an added bonus
Don't put too much emphasis on your wedding day, it might not be the best day of your life and that's ok. 

Do plan the morning of your wedding day and give jobs out to those getting ready with you, it'll help you begin the day feeling chilled.
Don't let too many people come to see you before the wedding, it can feel too hectic.

What is your advice when a couple is looking for a photographer?

Have a good look around a research the different styles of photography. Not every couple is right for every photographer. When you find someone that you like ask to see a couple of full galleries of work. When you have and you like their work, meet up with them. It's important that you get a good vibe from them when you meet. 

You are passionate about Eco Weddings like us. How can you be an eco wedding photographer?

I'm really careful with who I chose to supply my business. I make sure that I purchase supplies that are respectful to the environment and the people that make them.

Your top tip for Styling your day?

Less can be more! Don't worry about decorating everything. Your wedding is about you, your partner and your guests being together. 



Do you think you should "Trash your Dress"? 

It's up to the individual but the second hand wedding dress market is growing rapidly with 1 in 10 brides now considering buying second hand or renting the dress for their day. This is also better for the environment!

Engagement shoots seem to be very fashionable. What are the advantages of having one?

Engagement shoots are a great way to get to know your photographer and for you and your partner to get used to the camera. Plus who doesn't want to spend a couple of hours larking around with your loved one just for a laugh?!



What has surprised you the most about wedding photography?

How emotional it is! I feel absolutely exhausted the next day, not just because of the long hours but the emotional rollercoaster that every wedding presents. Sometimes I even cry during the speeches!

How you describe your style of photography?

I'm a very relaxed, informal photographer that has a documentary style. My photos are about people having a good time and the moments that unfold on your wedding day. They are the images that make you remember how you felt on your wedding day.

What can a couple do for you on the big day?

I like to meet up about a month before the wedding to go through the day in fine detail, this means that on the wedding day I know exactly what you have planned and when. I find that this helps the couple to forget about me being there and they concentrate on getting married and having fun with their family and friends! 

Indoor or outdoor wedding?

A bit of both! This is why I like shooting a pub wedding because there is usually a beer garden that can be used if it's sunny. 

Themed or none theme?

Difficult choice! I've seen both themed wedding and really simple weddings done really well. 

Local or Destination?

Local! Mainly because a local venue is easy for everyone to get to. Plus I don't do destination wedding because I have a big dog at home and I don't like to leave him. 

Big or small?

Small ceremony, big party!

Jonny and Charlotte Paperless Wedding Real Wedding story

We all love a Real Wedding blog post, as you get to grab a cuppa and browse through stunning wedding photography, gaze at amazing wedding and bridesmaid dresses, beautiful wedding flowers and romantic wedding venues.  This month's post is extra special for me, as I was at the wedding too! Last month my brother Jonathan, tied the knot with his beautiful bride Charlotte in the stunning Renaissance Hotel, Kings Cross. I was thrilled when they wanted to use Paperless Wedding for their special day (PHEW!), and we created a design that fitted their theme perfectly. 

Charlotte has a love of all things Grace Kelly, Art Nouveau and gold and sparkly. So Art Deco was their theme with a double shot of gin, as you will see what I mean. As both of them work in the theatre, Jonny is a Stage Manager and Charlotte is currently Wardrobe Mistress for School of Rock, their "Saturday" is actually Sunday, as that is when the industry has the day off. Surrounded by family and friends they exchanged rings, I did a short reading, my little people did some excellent aisle-walking and we dined on some delicious food! So let me hand over to both of them to share more about the day.

How was the wedding planning experience?

Jonny: For me it was reasonably straight forward. We organised it like a putting on a show. We found what we wanted and needed, found a range of suppliers and chose the best. From there, I worked on the same principle as putting on a performance, i.e. what do you need to just get the day going, then what do you need to do to make it a good day, and then what do you want to make it perfect? From this you can then think actually if we did the wedding now it would happen and everything and everyone would be happy, and then work forward to put the special bits on to make it perfect for you. This also helps control the budget, as when you start looking realistically at the day you could work out if it was necessary or if you want it just to make your day perfect.

Charlotte: We were holding the whole day at the Renaissance Hotel, so it made things much simpler as we didn't have to worry about getting from one place to another. They did most of the organising and we just had to tell them what we wanted. We are both quite good at working to a budget; there were some compromises made, but on the whole I feel we got all the important elements within the budget we set.

Where did you find your inspirations from?

Jonny: For me this came from Charlotte, I then tried to help bring what she wanted to life. She would come up with an idea, and then I would research it on Google and then find suggestions that fitted her idea. For example, personalised origami fortune tellers and decorative 3ft helium balloons!

Charlotte: It was my birthday just after we got engaged, so Jonny bought me a year's subscription to a wedding magazine, which was great for getting ideas. Pinterest is amazing for inspiration and for things you could make to help style the venue. I also went to a wedding fair, where it was great to see all the different options of things you can do. I had quite strong ideas of the sort of wedding I wanted so it was all about trying to find things that fitted with that theme. 

What was important to you when deciding on suppliers/venue?

Jonny: For me the venue had to be beautiful, what Charlotte wanted, within budget, and for the whole event to take place in one venue and be easily accessible. The Renaissance Hotel delivered on all fronts. From there we were very lucky with the package we were given. It included food, drink, tables, chairs, crockery, candles, tea lights, a wedding advisor and more, all included in the price (which depended on guest numbers making it easier to budget). This made life so much more straight forward. It was already a beautiful venue, so we didn’t have to spend lots to make it look special, so we could concentrate on the extras we needed, like the wedding photographer, flowers, and personal touches.

What made this particular venue so helpful is that you could personalise the package. This meant we could chose our own wedding breakfast menu (which included a fabulous food tasting session for all the wine, and a selection of food to choose from), and if you wanted to bring in your own chairs, decorations, or food and drink they were very amenable (some at extra cost and corkage).They also gave advice on suppliers that they have used before and know the venue.

The hotel suggested, Total Event Hire for the chairs, table centres and balloons. They knew the venue and were very helpful to sort out Charlotte’s design. So much so I never even saw them on the day, everything just appeared like magic by elves!! 

Charlotte also wanted to walk down the aisle to live music and while at a wedding fair heard a string quartet. We thought this would both sound and look amazing. We were not disappointed! After searching different websites we found The Dotted Crotchets  who fitted the bill. They were incredibly helpful and would even do requests in advance and make musical arrangements up (at an extra small cost). They also let a friend sing with them as we signed the register, which made it even more special. We can’t thank them enough!

We did have a disagreement on using a videographer, but Charlotte won me over and we made room in the budget and upped our savings to get someone. We looked through Google and wedding magazines to find an average price, and the type of style we wanted. We looked at sample videos online, and some they sent us and then we made our decision (I used to be a media student and some expensive ones were not well edited and didn't go with the music). From here we found Katie Tulip and her videos were so flowing, beautifully shot and picked up a feel for the day that we didn’t think we could find better and that made us tingle as much. The result we have already had through is fantastic, just see this still of my Charlotte's dad seeing her for the first time!

Charlotte:  We had a family friend who was a professional wedding photographer (Jonny Faint of Longfield Studios), and someone else was a florist. This would always be my preference over having to hunt through the internet trying to find someone. You already know them, how they work, the standard they work to…it's like the best recommendation you can have. It made me feel much calmer, particularly having a photographer I already knew. I felt at ease from the start of the day.

At some point budget did come into it with some of the ideas. The main one being a videographer…I was really keen and had met some at a wedding fair that I really liked, but it would have pushed us well over our budget. I did a lot of work and research trying to find a good company for a good price, it was probably the thing I spent the most time trying to find! It did take almost a year and I got a lot of recommendations and emailed a lot of people, and fortunately about a month before the wedding, we managed book someone who fulfilled all the criteria! 

Where did you find your dress?

Charlotte: I didn't really have any specific ideas for the kind of dress I wanted. I was keen try on every kind of style, to make sure I had picked the perfect dress. Working in costume and costume making, style and fit are really important. I knew loads of my colleagues would be coming on the day and would know all about it too. We went to about 5 different shops, and tried on loads of dresses and found quite a few that were almost ‘the one’.

Ultimately the dress I chose was the second one I tried on at the first shop we went to. It took me a while to narrow down what it was I really wanted and what kind of look I wanted, and I managed to dwindle it down the more styles I tried on. Plus it was really good fun! Also once the venue was confirmed that helped to give a feel of what style of dress would suit the day. My dress was an ivory, full skirted gown from Pronovias which we found at Teokath in Wimbledon.

How did you choose your hairstyle?

I really struggled with hairstyles…it isn’t really my thing! My hair is quite fine so having a 'down do' never really works, as it always falls out after an evening…let alone a day! I also didn't want it to look too formal either. That was the specification I gave my hairdresser, who is also a friend of mine. His name is Jose and we worked together on Oliver! The Musical a few years ago, before he moved to the Royal Opera House. I loved the idea of having a vintage feel, so we had one trial with an image I had found, but it didn't really suit me. We sent a few images backwards and forwards before the next trial and I left it up to his brilliance to create something, with a slight vintage feel, that would suit the dress and would stay all day. He got it absolutely right! He is an absolute legend.

What personal touches did you do for the day?

Jonny: The venue itself was beautiful, so we didn’t need to do much decorating. We did want to put our personalised stamp on the day and keep to the theme. We called the theme our 'Art Deco Gin Bar" theme, so there was quite a lot of things we could ‘play' with. Luckily the hotel got on the theme and got the serving staff to be dressed with suspenders to look like 1920s barmen, and we had candles in stunning brass lanterns down the aisle and down the corridors. 

Our first personalised item to the guests were the invitations and website, done by Paperless Wedding. These were so stylised and perfectly set for our wedding. The Art Deco vibe was felt by the guests before they even arrived. It was so simple and straight forward to do, and saved us on having to pay for all the stationery & postage, as well as being good for the environment (I know I am biased though!).

Total Event Hire did some fantastic table centres that were large martini glasses with floating flowers, and provided golden chairs for the guests that we loved.

We also made bits and pieces the week before the wedding, inviting the parents round, with payment of a glass of wine, to help cut and make different pieces. We made signs, table names, the table plan, bow ties, THE wedding cake (thanks mum!) and origami fortuneteller in the deco style. For the gin side, we named all the tables as our favourite gins and used the particular bottles on the tables (instead of signs) and filled them with delicate white flowers, which was echoed round the rest of the venue with more fine bottles and flowers.

Charlotte: We didn't want the day to become a 'stagey' affair, we figured a lot of guests might expect it to be based around musicals, but we wanted to show another side of us. We therefore decided on having a gin theme, so we based all our table names and centres around our favourite gins and even used gin bottles as vases! It was quite good fun finding different ways we could incorporate a gin theme into the day. My dad made a great giant word-search, which had different gins hidden on one side and then we did have different musicals we had worked on, on the other side. 

On the day itself what were the highlights for you?

Jonny: Obviously my lasting memory will be that first moment I saw Charlotte walking down the aisle looking as beautiful as ever. For the day it was everyone being there and enjoying it. Thinking back, I mainly think of people's smiles, and the children playing and having fun. The food was amazing and the band got everyone up on the dance floor and it just made for a really enjoyable day.


Charlotte: The whole day was a highlight! I wouldn’t have changed anything! I loved everyone getting ready in the morning, the ceremony was brilliant…probably the bit of the day you think about the least, but is actually the most important. It was really wonderful seeing Jonny full of smiles and all of our friends and family there to celebrate. There was so much fun and laughter and dancing…it was exactly what I wanted! I wasn’t interested in having a smooshy day…I wanted it full of fun and for everyone to have the best day!

What is your advice for other couples?

Jonny: My advice to anyone going through the preparation stages of the wedding is to relax and enjoy it. This day will (hopefully) only happen once and you want to enjoy it. Keep hold of your budget but don’t stress if you go over on something, as you maybe able to recoup it somewhere else. Make sure that it will be a day everyone will enjoy, that keeps everyone entertained, fed and watered but nothing that distracts you from having fun and remembering what a great day you had with your partner forever.

Charlotte: I'd say make sure you focus on what you want and don’t be guided by other people's ideas! We were so lucky to have so much support and advice from our amazing families to help guide us as it can be a bit overwhelming with all the options and choices. Start with the essentials and then build from there. Try not to stress about the little things, as they really aren't important in the grand scheme of things. The best bit of advice I was offered when I started planning was to make sure your guests are fed and watered, and they’ll be happy and I think it's pretty true!

Last year I went to the Wedding Show at Excel and visited a lot of stands. This one, KinetIQue, stood out and it was here I met a very inspiring couple, Elaine and Jason, whose business, brand, and product is ethical to its core. Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but if you put a real diamond next to a laboratory-grown one, would you be able to tell the difference? I couldn't, and my hand actually shook when I got to try on several of these stunning alternate diamond rings. They sparkled and if I had one, and knew what it stood for (aside from the undying love of my partner!) then I would be very proud to wear it and tell its story.

"As someone who only uses natural and organic make-up on a day to day basis, I have no doubt that I'm going to choose to go green on my upcoming wedding day too. Drinking enough water on a day-to-day basis is something I'm terrible at, even though I know the benefits it has for your skin. I know this is something everyone says but water really does make your skin look a million times better. It clears skin, reduces redness and even makes it look more plump & dewy so I know I'll be upping my water intake in the run-up to my wedding! Don't forget your other half can do this too!

It gives me great pleasure to share some stunning wedding photos of our latest couple Anna and Michael.  At the beginning of December 2016, they got married at Goldie Vineyard on Waiheke Island, New Zealand, surrounded by their closest friends and family.

We always love it when we get feedback on Paperless Wedding. We asked Anna why she went digital to begin with, as people have many reasons be it for budget reasons, time or the eco element of our offering. 

Anna said, "Went digital because we made Save the Date magnets, and then Thank You magnets as well, so thought a paper invite was overkill (and expensive!).  It is nice to see friends still have magnets up even though wedding is over."

I would like to introduce you to Orchid and Grove, a fab New Zealand-based wedding registry service. I know that New Zealand is not far from these shores, so I thought it might help couples planning weddings 'back home' and also to inspire you to look for a similar alternatives in Australia.

The wonder of this New Zealand service is that if they don’t have the gift listed, they will source it for you.  They can provide gifts unwrapped, which saves paper and deliver them all together, within NZ, which is great carbon footprint saving. What is Orchid and Grove?

We are an online wedding registry and homeware store created to give couples full control over the content of the gifts they choose for their wedding registry.

Where did this cool name come from? 

Orchid was a bar on Ponsonby Road where we had our awkward but relaxed first date way back in 2007 and Grove from our surname.  We like it.

4. Make some time for just you on the day (even if it's just 20 minutes).

Jackie and Duncan - Marathon Fundraiser Wedding

The story I am about to share with you is so inspiring. I heard about Jackie and her amazing wedding plans through a friend. I also heard the amazing things both Jackie and Duncan were doing for charity and really wanted to help. So I offered my services, and I am so pleased to be able to share this inspirational story with you. Within weeks of getting engaged, Jackie was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has since made it her mission to get married in a way that will help her support others going through similar treatment. The result is she is getting married on the morning of the 23rd April, before, (yes before!) running the London Marathon for charity!

So Jackie’s wedding planning is not that of an average bride, but I will let her tell all. Lets start at the beginning when love first blossomed.

How did you both meet and how did he/you pop the question?

Duncan and I met at university (they alphabetise the rooms in the first year so all of our friends were Ss, Rs and Ts). We got together in our first year and have been together ever since. As one of the first couples to actually get together in our friendship group, it was always a source of amusement that Duncan had never proposed. So, imagine my surprise on Christmas Day 2013, when he popped the questions (using a bride mug and a sign and not a ring). We’d been together 13 years and our friends described it as a Christmas miracle. It’s a moment I will never forget.

Of course, what neither of us realised as we sipped our fizz that night, that the lump I found in my breast the night before would turn out to be breast cancer. We were only 32.

Three weeks later, we weren’t discussing guest lists and venues, but mastectomies, fertility preservation and chemotherapy. It was terrifying.

What inspired you to do this sort of wedding?

A few weeks after my diagnosis, I decided to not to count the days before the end of active treatment but make every day count. I started volunteering for a number of different cancer-related charities and found that adding a bit of meaning and purpose into every day made each day better.

Having had my hip rebuilt in my 20s and having to learn to walk again taught me what to fear from cancer treatment. So, when the oncologist told me I would possibly gain 3 stone during chemo, I decided to take control. I chose running, the hardest thing I could think of, because I wanted to show cancer it could take a lot, but it would never take my smile.

I started running during chemo and ran my first 10k with a PICC line (long tube) in my arm, no hair and a reconstructed breast and superglued stomach (from surgery). Running made me feel alive and I was just a beginner.

Running and volunteering helped me move forward. They also brought Duncan and I together in a way that wasn’t about hospitals and toxic drugs. It was about kindness, health and happiness. It kept us strong. So, when Duncan hinted that he might actually like to walk down the aisle, I explained that if there was to be a wedding it would have to involve exercise and charity - the two things that make every day special.

So, plan a charity fundraiser wedding is exactly what we’ve done.

What planning challenges have you had?

I confess I thought cutting out things like three-course meals, line ups, first dances and traditional wedding clothes would make things simple.  Not so. It would seem getting married at 7.30am on the Cutty Sark before running the London Marathon and then trekking a part of the Great Wall of China for your honeymoon is actually quite unusual. (I should add that we do get to party in the middle!).

Instead of florists and bunting we have road closure teams, press teams, a celebrity dressmaker and a registrar who is still coming to terms with the early start!

Plus, we have created something that relies on us being fit and well, which is easier than it sounds. I never thought I’d need a physio instead of a wedding planner!

How did you pick the theme for your day?

What we love about the Cutty Sark is that it is a venue that screams adventure. It’s also a ship that has, in many ways, been saved by the things that haven’t gone well in its history. I can certainly relate to that. Life is a difficult journey and we want to use our wedding to inspire the world to make the most of that journey.

As you have planned your wedding what has been one of the most fun bits to sort out?

I have loved thinking about the little details that will turn our reception into a big thank you party for everyone who has supported us. We want people to leave inspired to go on their own adventures and really seize the day! I am looking forward to making my own cake (eek) and have had more fun than I ever thought I would with my outfits. Frankie Seaman (Dancing on Ice professional skater) reminded me to do something for myself and make the dress special. She is designing a wedding dress I can run in, not a running dress.  And, providing we all make it in one piece, I am excited about the marathon training. The father of the bride and my cousin have joined the team, so it’s going to be emotional.

You are running for Charities close to your heart. What are they and how have they helped?

We are raising money for Willow and Breast Cancer Care. Both charities helped us celebrate our engagement at a time that could have ripped us apart.  Willow is the only charity to give seriously-ill young adults the chance to have a special day away from the hospitals and the drugs. We went on the Orient Express and were reminded of the fact that while hospitals are an important part of the fight, so too is the chance to think about what you’re fighting for.

Breast Cancer Care helps thousands of people through cancer treatment every year. They were there for me from day one with their information leaflets, headwear classes, young women seminars and support lines and I really couldn’t have found my smile without them.

Who has helped you plan this day?

Too many to mention in one post! I am grateful to so many people for helping make our fundraiser wedding a wedding to remember. People have been so generous. Lovely Emma (who runs this site) donated our web page and my art director friend George designed the amazing nautical theme. Pret are giving us free Love Bars for our party and both Brooks and Saucony have helped us with running kit for the big day. We’ve had socks, energy drinks, mugs and even a piggy bank from Virgin Money Giving. I am genuinely touched by the kindness we have experienced. Our families are being great too (once they got over the shock).

Now, we just need to pull it off! Wish us luck....

We are starting 2017 'Photography in Focus' with New Zealand Photographer Kate Robinson. I actually discovered Kate's work via her fantastic monthly podcast called Planted With Light which focuses on inspiring women who run their own businesses. I then began following her on social media and checked out her photography and knew she would be a great person to share with you all. 

If you have not read this series of blog posts before, I ask photographers to share their top 'dos and don't' tips in short twitter like answer. Photographers have seen a lot of weddings and so are a great source of information, and picking the one for you is important. Kate shares her top tips to help you plan your wedding.

New Theme Creator is coming!

Happy New Year to one and all!! Congratulations if you are recently engaged and if you are getting married this year. We have exciting stuff happening that could be just for you.

We have a BIG January and even BIGGER February coming up for us at Paperless Wedding. Why I hear you cry? Well we are well underway with creating our brand new theme creator.  The theme creator is the place where you select a theme and then edit it to suit your wedding. You could even create your very own design and not use any of our premade themes.

Over the last year we have looked at how past couples are using the site and how we can improve this experience and the overall design of your wedding websites.

  • We want each wedding website design to be unique to you and your wedding.
  • We want it to be easy to use for all levels of technical and design ability.
  • We want it to look great across ALL devices.
  • We want your guests to LOVE it and find it the perfect place to get all they need to know about your big day.

 

 

The site will be easy to navigate via a menu on the left hand side. Our current themes will be loaded in and you will be able to edit and add to them. 

All details you enter about your special day will be visible straight away on the site and you will be able to change the font, colour and position of the text.

We are also changing the look of the envelope that your guests will see.  It will tie in with your wedding colours and you will have 3 to choose from. 

So as you can see there are some majorly exiting things happening and I can't wait to share them with you. If you are already designing your site now, don't worry you will be able to keep what you have done and nothing will change.  However if you want to use the new site all your details will be there, you will just need to re-upload any design images into the new theme creator.  We hope this will be launched in February!

Looking back on last year I can now share with you are most popular designs of 2016 and all will be available in the new system, along with many more!
